Clay is a twelve year-old boy with an inquisitive spirit and strong imagination. He is determined to carry out his G-pa's final request, by spreading his remains at the source of their favorite river. With no one to turn to, Clay sets off in search of his idyllic vision of his father. But Clay is not alone on the trail. He has a special connection with the spirit world where his Grandpa watches over him and he is guided by the spirit of the Osprey.
Dikeledi, or Ledi as she is called, is a native Oregonian on a three-day hike seeking a life changing experience. She has fallen into a depression ever since her young son drowned in the Rogue. On the trail, she discovers Clay is alone, so she takes the boy under her wing to help find his dad. As she bonds with Clay, the responsibility of helping this boy begins to heal her.
G-pa, Clay's nickname for his Grandpa, has taken care of his grandson ever since his mother died. A die hard fisherman, G-pa taught Clay all he knows about fishing the Rogue. After his death, G-pa's Spirit returns and urges his grandson to deliver his ashes to the source of the Rogue. G-pa hopes that the journey will allow Clay to reconnect with his father. G-pa's Spirit follows along with Clay as his protector on the trail, but his spirit fades as Clay becomes more independent.
Cliff is Clay's absentee father. When Clay arrives at his doorstep, Cliff doesn't want anything to do with him. After his wife's death, Cliff fell into the depths of alcoholism, letting the responsibility of raising his son fall on his father. Cliff doesn't want his former life to change his current one, and he is too blinded by fear to see that raising Clay could be the best thing to happen to him.
